Downwind Series Sails

While your mainsail and headsail are optimized for upwind performance, many modern cruising boats lack power when sailing off the wind in light to medium wind conditions. Adding an auxiliary downwind sail can greatly increase your sailing range, reduce dependence on the engine, and enhance both speed and enjoyment of your boat. With a wide variety of Downwind Sail types and handling systems available, the right choice can truly elevate your cruising experience. At Evolution Sailmakers, we specialize in off-wind sails and offer a wide variety of Downwind Sail types and handling systems. The right choices in outfitting your boat can truly transform your cruising experience, and we are here to help you navigate the benefits and considerations of all your options.

At Evolution Sailmakers, we offer a full selection of off-wind sail solutions, ranging from close-reaching Code Zeros to full-sized running spinnakers. Our Downwind Sails fall into two broad categories: Cruising Code Sails and Cruising Spinnakers.

Cruising Code Sails feature a built-in structural torsion cable in the luff, ensuring stability and ease of handling. This integrated cable allows for seamless furling with a roller furler, and for added durability, we can apply a protective sun shield to the leech and foot, allowing the sail to remain deployed for extended periods without excessive wear.

Cruising Spinnakers, on the other hand, are free-flying sails with a more elliptical shape, designed to generate maximum power. These sails are the most versatile off-wind option, delivering superior performance across a variety of sailing conditions.

At Evolution Sailmakers, we take a hands-on approach to downwind sail design, tailoring each sail to your boat’s rig, performance needs, and your experience level as a sailor. Whether you're navigating coastal waters or crossing oceans, our Code Zeros and Spinnakers are designed for easy handling while harnessing every available breeze for efficient, enjoyable sailing.

Cruising Asymmetric Spinnakers

Our line of asymmetric cruising spinnakers are big colorful sails with a low of power. Our asymmetric cruising spinnakers can be designed and built for a range of wind angles and speed. While racing yachts often carry multiple highly specialized spinnakers—each tuned to narrow wind ranges—this approach isn’t practical for most cruisers. Instead, we focus on designing versatile cruising spinnakers that simplify sail inventory without compromising performance.

Some sailors cruise in regions where reaching is the norm, while others spend extended time in tradewind conditions with deep running angles. For these customers, we can custom design a reaching spinnaker (Cruise A1) or a running spinnaker (Cruise A2) that matches the customers need.

By far, our most popular cruising spinnaker is the Cruise A1.5, an all-purpose sail designed for both versatility and power. It performs best in true wind speeds of 5 to 20 knots and apparent wind angles between 70° and 140°. The Cruise A1.5 can be equipped with an ATN snuffer or a top-down furler, making it easy to deploy and retrieve. Compared to the Cruising Code Zero (CCZ), this sail is larger and more powerful, offering a wider range of usable wind angles. The elliptical luff shape enhances projection at deeper angles, maximizing off-wind performance. It’s also available in a variety of color options for a customized look. However, unlike furling sails, it must be hoisted and doused with each use, requiring more active sail handling.

Keeping these sails, and their handling systems, simple and safe is the name of the game.

Cruising Code Sails

Code Sails are designed for effortless handling and stability, thanks to the built-in structural torsion cable in the luff. This integrated cable enhances the performance of the sail and allows for easy furling with a roller furler. To add durability and convenience, a protective sun shield can be applied to the leech and foot, ensuring the sail remains protected when left up for extended periods.

Code Sails come in a range of cloth types tailored to expected wind speeds and sailing angles. These materials vary from stiff, low-stretch laminates reinforced with exotic fibers to durable woven polyester. For close-reaching sails, we prioritize the low-stretch laminate for precision and stability, while deeper angles call for the longer-lasting woven cloth.

For example, our Cruising Code 55 sails are designed to sail close reaching angles.  They are flatter, slightly smaller, and built from low-stretch laminated materials for optimal shape control. On the other end of the spectrum, our Code 75 sails are the largest in our lineup, constructed from durable woven cloth and shaped for lower sailing angles. The All-Purpose Code 65 remains the most popular choice, offering unmatched versatility and reliability. These sails are commonly made from high-quality woven cloth, such as Contender Stormlite or Challenge Code-Tec, ensuring durability and performance. Every Code Sail can be equipped with a UV cover, and we typically deliver each sail as a complete package, including a furling system and sheets for added convenience.
